Meet the team behind GreenFrontier
The team consists of George Iordăchescu as Principal Investigator and three Post-Doctoral Researchers, Marco Immovilli, Eleonora Fanari and Mariusz Boćkowski. Each team member carries their own research within the GreenFrontier framework. If you have questions about individual projects, please get in touch with a member of the team.
The project is based in the Forest and Nature Conservation Policy Group at Wageningen University.
George Iordăchescu
Principal Investigator
George is a political ecologist researching the politics of conservation and just environmental futures. George has a background in social anthropology and contemporary history, and his work spans the disciplines of human geography, green criminology and conservation social sciences. His research interests include the governance of nature protection in the European Union, forest commons, human-bear conflicts & coexistence, environmental crime and environmental politics in Europe.
He gained his PhD in 2019 from the IMT School of Advanced Studies (Lucca, Italy) with a dissertation about the development of strict protection of wild nature in eastern Europe and its impact on local livelihoods.

Marco Immovilli
Post-Doctoral Researcher
Marco is a political ecologist researching rural development, biodiversity conservation and alternatives to capitalism. With a background in social sciences, ranging from political sciences to anthropology, his research interests include the politics of rural and mountain development in Europe, agrarian change, the development of post-capitalist alternatives, convivial conservation, socio-ecological care and value pluralism.
In 2025, he completed his PhD at Wageningen University, with a dissertation about neo-ruralism and how post-capitalist alternatives are made, maintained, and marginalized in the Italian Alps.

Eleonora Fanari
Post-Doctoral Researcher
Eleonora is a political ecologist researching conservation justice, decolonial perspectives, and community rights. With a background in social sciences and experience in international human rights organizations, her work explores social and climate justice movements, forest conservation governance, militarization, and rural and feminist studies. She serves on the Environmental Justice Atlas Direction Board and coordinates the European regional network of the ICCA Consortium.
In 2024, she completed her PhD at ICTA, Autonomous University of Barcelona, with a dissertation examining the intersections of violence, securitization and conservation in protected areas in India and their impacts on local communities and justice.

Mariusz Boćkowski
Post-Doctoral Researcher
Mariusz is a conservation biologist and social scientist whose research is focused on environmental protection. His research interests include the social and economic aspects of nature conservation relating to protected areas, ecological connectivity, ecosystem services, blue and green infrastructure, environmental management and governance, and public participation in nature conservation. His work also encompasses the intricacies of human-nature relations and environmental conflicts. Mariusz’s current focus is on the relationship between humans and the environment, with a particular emphasis on the analytical frameworks of political ecology and environmental anthropology.
